How to Prepare Your Church Building for Winter Weather
Snow. Ice. Cold weather advisories. Winter weather can make travel difficult and lead to power outages. This combination becomes a major concern when it comes to preventing water damage from frozen pipes in your building.
Having a plan in place can help avoid damage and the need to file insurance claims. Consequently, Brotherhood Mutual has shared with us a quick list of things to do today with your team to help minimize damage to your ministry buildings.
Winter Weather Checklist:
- Is someone appointed to check on your building? Is there a back-up person, in case that person is on vacation or ill?
- Do they know where water supply valves are located? If a pipe bursts, time is critical. Know where valves are located for all buildings. Keep the tools to close the valves nearby. Be sure to include areas with baptisteries, laundry rooms, and water heaters in your search.
- Do you have the heat programmed to be ON and is it set no lower than 55 degrees? Does this include unused portions of your building?
- Will someone turn faucets to drip? This keeps water moving inside pipes.
- Does your team know to prop open room doors and cabinet doors beneath sinks? This will keep heat circulating the building.
- Do you have insulation sleeves on hand for exposed pipes?
- Have you prepped your generator lately? The goal is to maintain heat in the building when a big freeze takes down power lines.
