Courage House Tanzania
Courage Worldwide (CWW) became a registered Tanzanian Non-Government Organization (NGO) in 2009 with the goal of opening a Courage House, which is a faith-based residential trauma treatment program and home for minor girls who have been trafficked for sex. After several years of collaborating with the local government, other NGOs as well as the faith-based community, Courage House became home to ten girls who had a history of this abuse and exploitation, along with two of their babies in late 2011.
As of January 2022, 60 girls and their children call Courage House home. CWW works closely with Tanzania's Department of Social Welfare for referrals, and to ensure compliance of all child welfare and government regulations. More than 40 staff care for the physical, emotional, spiritual, and educational needs of our girls, helping each of them experience God’s love and purpose for their lives.
Courage House Too is our program for residents (ages 18+) transitioning out of the Courage House program into college, vocational training and jobs in preparation for independent living. Currently, 18 graduates of the Courage House program take part in this residential program as they pursue higher education and progress into adulthood.
Our most recent development is Courage Café in Moshi, a space for spreading awareness of human trafficking, an arm of our vocational training for the members of our vocational training program, in-country diversification of funding for CWW, and a cozy café for the Moshi community. It is our mission and ministry to use the space of Courage Café and Events Center to educate the community on trafficking, its nature and how we can work together to support victims and end this crime against the most vulnerable. We have had the opportunity to train many leaders, pastors, and young adults on the causes, solutions, and prevention of human trafficking. We believe our call as followers of Jesus is to set captives free, as it was His mission (Luke 4).
The vision of Courage Worldwide is to replicate this model in every city in the world that needs one. Now that we have successfully established and prototyped Courage House, Courage House Too and Courage Café in the Kilimanjaro Region, it is time for expansion and replication. Beginning in 2022, Courage Worldwide is bringing our model based on culturally-relevant trauma therapy, restoration and assistance to victims of sex trafficking to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There is a need for victim support in this rapidly growing urban city and we are excited to continue partnering with a variety of stakeholders, including governmental, non-governmental, intergovernmental, faith-based leaders and communities, businesspeople and more, to see the eradication of this crime against the most vulnerable and to rescue and restore more victims. Goals in 2023 is to continue to expand in countries in East Africa and beyond, wherever God leads.
