Thank you for viewing our posting!

In 1897 a group of German immigrants began meeting in Sibley, Iowa, with the intent of forming a Lutheran church.  On Pentecost Sunday of 1898 Trinity Lutheran was officially organized.  The six founding families purchased an existing church building, and Trinity Lutheran Church had a home. In 1902 Trinity Lutheran joined Immanuel Lutheran, a near rural church, to become a two-point parish. Through the years the church experienced steady growth. By 1950 three services were being held to accommodate the membership, and the decision was made to build a new building. At this time Immanuel Lutheran decided to close their building and join Trinity in Sibley. The planning committee with much foresight decided to build all on one level.  This building has served the congregation well.  After 50 years it was time for some maintenance and updating. In 2008 a major remodel was undertaken including a new kitchen, youth room addition, and fully handicap accessible restrooms. The building is now ready to serve the congregation for a long time. We plan on retiring the mortgage on this remodel in the next 18 months.

Through all of this time Trinity was a member of the ELCA and its predecessors. In the past number of years some of the practices and teachings of the ELCA have become troublesome to our membership. We struggled with this and a number of members left Trinity. In 2020 the proposal to leave ELCA was brought up. After much discussion and soul searching, an overwhelming percentage of the congregation voted to leave the ELCA and join LCMC. Since that vote, services have been conducted by several able lay members, and we currently are being led by an interim pastor.

Trinity holds weekly traditional services and in the past has had a contemporary service led by our praise team once a month. During the school year, the service is preceded by Sunday school for the youth and an adult Bible study. Our congregation is active in many mission and social projects. Just to name a few:  Atlas, school backpacks, local food drives, deliver meals on wheels, provide location for local WIC consultations, active chapter of Relay for Life, helping serve at  he Banquet, and the annual community passion play on Good Friday. We also hold an annual Polka Fest which is attended by many from the community, hold a community soup and pie supper, serve a Specken Dicken meal at New Years, as well as numerous potlucks, many in support of local causes. We are currently, jointly with our interim pastor, supporting “Reaching the Unreached” outreach in Africa. A group meets every Wednesday AM at the Lantern, a local Christian coffee house, for a time of fellowship, and have a coffee hour after church on Sunday mornings. For many years we have had a Saturday morning men’s Bible study. This is currently inactive due to covid restrictions.

Trinity offers a large modern parsonage with attached double garage and a full basement. There are several bedrooms on the main and upper level. The parsonage has recently been updated and is next to the church building.

As is true with many churches in rural America, Trinity is smaller than it once was but retains a very solid core of members who support the church and want to move forward. We are seeking a pastor who can help us go forward with our faith-based biblical teachings.  We are looking for help rebuilding our younger membership and Sunday School. We also need someone who will visit the elderly, shut-in members, and the inactive. Sibley has a growing Hispanic population so someone who can reach out to them would be a plus.

Sibley is a rural community of 2500 in the conservative NW corner of Iowa. We have local stores which provide for most of our daily needs, as well as larger shopping areas within a short drive. We are only an hour drive from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Sioux City, Iowa, and about 40 minutes from the Iowa Great Lakes. We have a great local hospital which is staffed by 4 doctors and a PA. The hospital also is home to a great physical therapy department, wellness center, and a daycare center. There are two nursing homes and 2 assisted living facilities in town. Our school system is complete K-12, in up-to-date buildings. The sports teams are competitive. We have excellent fine arts programs also. Located only 20 minutes away in two directions are two outstanding community colleges. Other amenities in town including a golf course, new swimming pool, 2 campgrounds, movie theater, bowling alley, and library.  While Sibley is an agricultural community, there are also manufacturing facilities in Sibley and nearby towns for family employment as well as opportunities in education, health care, retail, clerical, and many others.
