    Elk Horn Lutheran Church is seeking a full-time pastor who would enjoy leading a small and caring rural congregation in Southwest Iowa.

    Our Pastoral candidate must be certified with LCMC or willing to seek certification.

    We seek a full-time pastor that will lead and inspire the congregation through a personal example of a life dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ

    Elk Horn Lutheran Church is located in Elk Horn, Iowa, a community with a population of 650 and only one church.  Our membership is 123 active members, and the weekly attendance averages 72 members.

    We are a fellowship of believers, made in God’s image and called as disciples of Christ to share the Good News with everyone through learning, listening, praying, and working together actively to reach out to our communities.  We are a place to believe, belong, and become!

    Job Description                    

    Pastor

    General Function

    • Preach the word faithfully

    • Administer the Sacraments rightly

    • Visit the sick and grieving

    • Lead and equip us in fulfilling our call to give faithful witness

    • Provide leadership to and support of the spiritual well-being of the membership of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church

    • Strive in word and action to be a worthy example in Christian living

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Worship

      • Preach and teach the Word of God and ensure the right administration of the Sacraments

      • Plan and lead worship services

      • Work with others to maintain an interest among all ages during worship

      • Officiate at special services

    • Education

      • Encourage and participate in the development, leadership, and implementation of Christian education programs

      • Maintain a focus on and plan for personal continuing education for own spiritual growth

      • Teach confirmation classes

    • Pastoral Care

      • Provide pastoral care to members thru visitation and prayer

      • Make regular visits to the sick and grieving and develop systems to learn who is in need

      • Visit and minister to members in local care facilities

      • Make appropriate referrals when necessary and respond quickly to crisis situations that arise in the congregation

      • Ensure coverage for the provision of timely care to members in case of emergency pastoral needs

    • Fellowship/Outreach

      • Emphasize and demonstrate that the congregation has a vital role for those whom are not yet members and for those whom have yet to know the Gospel

      • Maintain an active and visible role within the community

      • Encourage, support, and provide direction

    • Leadership

      • Give Pastoral leadership for meetings, activities and organizations

      • Work to involve all in the congregation by encouraging others and building personal relationships

    • Administration

      • Maintain a regular presence in the office

      • Provide guidance to the Council meetings or other meetings as requested

      • Assist in preparation of congregational communications

    Desired Personal Characteristics

    We are looking for someone who strives to live the gospel in his/her own life, in and out of the church, with a good character.  Must be comfortable communicating with others in a respectful way.  Must be passionate about change and willing to bring suggestions to the church and council.

    Minimum Qualifications (Education/Experience):

    The pastor will have a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited Lutheran Seminary and be certified by LCMC or willing to seek certification.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

    • Highly developed interpersonal skills, demonstrating a love for others and a passion for ministry

    • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others to serve

    • Organizational and delegation skills, with ability to listen to others effectively and with intention

    • Ability to speak with clarity and communicate effectively
