    Job Description:      Senior Pastor

    Position Purpose: The Senior Pastor is to provide spiritual and pastoral leadership to the membership of Living Word Lutheran Church. The Senior Pastor will serve as the chief administrator of the congregation so that it might fulfill its mission and purpose as the body of Christ. The Senior Pastor will preach, teach, and administer the Sacraments and give primary leadership in the ministries of Growth, Discipleship, and Operations.

    Supervision: The Senior Pastor serves under the supervision of the Church Congregational Board.

    Responsibilities: Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the Church

    Job Description:

    Position Purpose: The Senior Pastor is to provide spiritual and pastoral leadership to the membership of Living Word Lutheran Church. The Pastor will work to serve the congregation so that it might fulfill its mission and purpose as the body of Christ. The Pastor will preach, teach, and administer the Sacraments.

    Supervision: The Senior Pastor serves under the supervision of the Church Congregational Board.

    Responsibilities: Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the Church Congregational Board.

    Worship 

     To regularly preach and teach the Word of God and administer the Sacraments in the congregation.

    To plan and lead the worship of the church with input from the Worship committee, the choir director, and the pianist. 

    To officiate at special services such as weddings, funerals, nursing home services, etc.

    To work to develop alternative worship services to meet the needs of the congregation.

    Pastoral Care and Education

    Conduct visitation, provide counseling, and respond to crisis situations that arise within the congregation or community.

    Provide adult Bible study and assist Christian Education and Evangelism Committee in providing instruction to children and youth.

    Administration

    Follow and comply with the Human Resource Policy Manuel requirements. Specifically, the following:

    1. Staff. The Pastor will see that staff meetings are held regularly for pastoral, leadership, and support staff. All employees are expected to attend and contribute to these meetings
    2. Job Descriptions. The Pastor will see that staff prepare and update their Job Descriptions yearly to meet the varying conditions of Living Word Lutheran Church. The approval of the HR Committee and the Pastor is required for changes to the job description. Changes in the Pastor's job description will only be done as a result of action by the Congregational Board.
    3. Goals and Objectives. The Pastor will see that each staff member prepares a set of goals and objectives for the year in line with his or her job description as well as a plan of action to carry out these goals and objectives in cooperation with the membership of Living Word Lutheran Church. Goals are to be completed in September of each year, reviewed in March, and then evaluated in September of the following year prior to the September Evaluations. The Evaluations of the Pastor and Staff should reflect the success of completing or not completing the goals.
    4. Performance Evaluations. The Pastor will see that each staff member is evaluated yearly per the timetable defined in the HR Policy Manual.
    5. Personnel File. The Pastor and/or designee will see that a personnel file is maintained on each member of staff.
    6. Annual Salary Review. The Pastor and the HR Committee will review wages annually, compare them to the general wage level of similar work, and report to the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee will take these recommendations into consideration when preparing the staff budget. The Finance Committee will give a copy of the final report to the Pastor and/or designee and the HR Committee.

    Oversees the administration and management of all areas of the congregation's ministry in consultation with the Congregational Board, committees, and staff. 

    Supports supervises, manages, and evaluates the Choir Director, Pianist, and Office Manager. Participates in screening and hiring of staff. Builds teamwork amongst the staff.

    1. Works with the finance and Stewardship committees to promote, educate, and advocate responsible Biblical stewardship.
    2. Helps to develop an annual budget and review process for all ministries.
    3. Helps to promote benevolence and mission activities.

    Property Oversight 

    1. Familiarizes himself with the properties of the congregation and the method of establishing the customary worship space. Oversees the management of the office space and works with the Acquisition Committee to obtain a permanent facility.
    2. To review periodically, the volunteer management plan which ensures the facilities of the church are functional and in good repair.

    Outreach

    1. Seeks opportunities to be a presence in the community, for example by serving as a chaplain for the hospital, joining a community assistance association, and/or linking with other Christian entities in the area.
    2. Seek out and become involved in local community businesses and youth organizations so that our community is aware of our presence.
    3. Becomes familiar with referral organizations for congregational and community needs.
    4. The Pastor will annually attend regional and national gatherings of LCMC to maintain familiarity with the LCMC doctrine and activities.

    Working Conditions

    1. These duties require great flexibility in hours, including evenings and weekends. The Pastor should be in the office for a sufficient amount of time for accessibility to members of the congregation and for regular communication with members of the church staff.
