St. Matthew’s is an established church in the town of Galena located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The town boasts a population of about 3600 and is rich in history and tourism. Galena is the hometown of President Ulysses S. Grant and nine Civil War generals. The beautiful hilly area near the Mississippi River is home to many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and golf. The town’s main industry is tourism lending itself to be home to many wonderful restaurants, parks, and shopping.
We average about 70 to 80 worshipers per week split between our Saturday evening and Sunday morning services. In addition to worship, we have several opportunities during the week to engage in Bible Study. We have an active Sunday School; Wednesday morning men’s breakfast, Prairie Ridge Bible study, Brown Bag Bible study and Nursing Home Bible study; women’s quilting and lap blanket ministries; adult choir; and we are also home to Little Learner’s Preschool. While our congregation is over 160 years old, our physical building has been well maintained. We have an updated kitchen facility, an in-house planetarium, and a state of the art projection system both within the sanctuary and in the fellowship hall.
Our next pastor should be eager to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through the word and sacraments. We desire a balanced ministry of preaching, teaching, pastoral care and organizational leadership within our congregation. We look forward to growing to our fullest potential in both membership and spiritual vitality.
