Heartland District - Seminary Student Aid
What is the Heartland District Seminary Student Aid?
Financial assistance is available for students seeking to serve as certified or contract pastors of member congregations of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). This assistance is provided as a service work loan; i.e. if the student does not continue seminary studies or does not become a certified or contract pastor it is expected that the aid be returned to the district, so that the money may be used to support future pastors of the LCMC. Since there are a variety of seminary options available to students today (both residential and online), applications are considered on a case by case basis. However, the student’s intent should clearly be to receive a Lutheran theological education with the result of serving at a congregation associated with LCMC.
Who may apply?
Any student attending a seminary that intends to enter certified or contract pastoral ministry in the LCMC, and is an active member of a congregation in the Heartland District of the LCMC.
Requirements:
- Acceptance and enrollment at a seminary;
- College/Seminary GPA of 2.0 or above;
- Completion of an application;
- Written recommendation from candidate’s home church pastor or a member of the Church Council;
- Expectation that the recipient will maintain yearly contact with the Heartland District through a letter relating his or her seminary experience and, if possible, attendance at the annual Heartland District Gathering.
Selection:
Selection will be made by the Heartland District student aid committee. The committee is composed of no less than three members of the Heartland District Council. Applications need to be submitted to the District by May 1st, with awards to be announced at the annual District Gathering in August.
Award Amounts:
Award amounts will depend on the availability of funds and the number of applicants. Applicants may renew scholarship requests by written application for each seminary year, including Internship, and submit verification of satisfactory progress (GPA 2.0 or above) in his/her seminary studies.
Repayment:
If the student discontinues studies at a seminary or does not enter the professional certified or contract ministry of the church following seminary it is expected that the student aid be repaid in full within two years after receiving the last award. If the student enters the ministry and serves as a certified or contract pastor of a LCMC congregation, one fourth of the aid total is considered repaid for every year of service; i.e. after four years of service the entire award is considered paid. The terms of this scholarship may be revised at any time by Heartland District Council.
APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MAY 15, WITH AWARDS GRANTED IN AUGUST
